The Lancet Oncology Commission on Radiotherapy and Theranostics published its important report in September 2024. The report outlines strategies to optimize patient care and improve health outcomes. It highlights initiatives to strengthen global access to radiotherapy and proposes actionable steps to expand access to these cancer treatments.
Radiotherapy and theranostics in a changing world
GCR was featured in the commentary on the Lancet Commission: “Radiotherapy and theranostics in a changing world.”
The commentary indicated that global events over the past decade have significantly hindered the advancement of radiotherapy worldwide, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and regional conflicts and wars.
“The Global Coalition for Radiotherapy was formed in 2020 to understand the challenges and opportunities facing radiotherapy services in light of the disruption to cancer care caused by the pandemic, and it continues to advocate for universal and equitable radiotherapy care worldwide.”
The article also described the GCR’s involvement in Ukraine after the Russian invasion.
“The WHO Emergency Committee for Cancer in Ukraine called on the Global Coalition for Radiotherapy and the European Cancer Organisation–American Society of Clinical Oncology Special Network to set up an Emergency Radiotherapy Task Force to collect data on radiotherapy treatment capacity and needs in real time and to mitigate the effects of the war on cancer care in Ukraine.”
Although we are a relatively new organisation, it is an honor to be mentioned in this piece and we are proud to continue this important work.
